GROWING MINDS COUNTYWIDE
Early Literacy
Early literacy encompasses the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that form the foundation for reading and writing. The first five years of a child’s life represent a critical window for brain development as young minds are exceptionally receptive to language acquisition, vocabulary building, and pre-reading skills. During this period, children who are exposed to rich language experiences including talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing develop stronger neural pathways that support later academic success. Research consistently shows that early literacy experiences not only prepare children to become confident readers but also foster curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. These foundational skills directly impact a child’s ability to succeed in school and beyond, making early literacy intervention one of the most important investments a community can make in its youngest members.
